‘There is no Holy One like the Lord, no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.’ 1 Samuel 2:2 (Hannah’s Prayer)
Can you name where in Arizona this sign is located? Don’t worry, I will tell you! I discovered it on a warm day along a winding path at a very special place -- the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson. My first thought was what an apt sign for life these hard days! But then I started thinking about life on the rocks in scripture.
The scriptures guide us and help us identify who God is and what God does in Jesus. In Isaiah the Lord’s guiding message to the struggling Israelites says, Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn. In 1 Corinthians 10:4, Paul refers to the Israelites in their desert wandering and says their faith rises from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. At God’s behest, Moses brought water from the rock that quenched the thirst of the desert wanderers in Exodus. Jesus built his church on the rock of faith beginning with Peter. Jesus is the rock of our faith. He is the cornerstone that we stand upon and holds us up in hard times.
Many are struggling wondering how to navigate these difficult days. As we hear in Hannah’s prayer in 1 Samuel 2, there is no Rock like our God. Solid, steadfast, and true, God stands with us in our faith walk even as we struggle giving us faith, hope, and love to navigate the path ahead. Life on the rocks is a blessing as we stand on our Rock, Jesus, who quenches our thirst on the path of 2025. May we embrace Hannah’s prayer:
‘My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is exalted in my God,’
